Musala is the highest point in Bulgaria and on the whole Balkan peninsula, and for a summit with that title it is a very forgiving walk. Most people take the Yastrebets gondola out of Borovets, which drops you at about 2,370 m and turns the day into a long, mostly gentle approach followed by one honest climb.
The first hour to Musala hut is nearly flat, on a wide path that is busy on summer weekends. Past the hut the trail steps up through a chain of cirque lakes. The Ledeno Ezero shelter, beside the Icy Lake at roughly 2,700 m, is the last place to sit down out of the wind before the final ridge.
From the shelter there are two lines: the summer path that zigzags up the slope, and the winter route along the ridge with a fixed cable. In dry conditions take the zigzags up and do not bother with the cable. Check the last gondola time before you leave, because walking down to Borovets adds about two and a half hours.
